Whittier Oral Surgery - Wisdom Teeth Extraction

At Robert S. Parminter, D.D.S., we provide oral surgery services to our Whittier patients by Dr. Todd Sumner, our expert oral surgeon. Dr. Sumner has been in practice since 1992 and is happy to be your trusted source for treatment with oral surgery in Whittier. We focus on performing tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removals, and other oral surgery procedures in a friendly and family-oriented environment.

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is usually reserved for a tooth that cannot be salvaged by any other means, but there are a number of reasons to consider removing a tooth. Reasons include:

• Severe decay

• Gum disease

• Preparation for other procedures, including braces and dentures

• Interference with other teeth

• Cosmetic purposes

• Trauma

To reduce discomfort, a tooth extraction is performed under sedation or general anesthesia. Extractions can either be simple or complex, pending on the disease process and surrounding anatomical structures Our Whittier oral surgeon takes the time to go over your treatment plan so you know exactly what procedures are involved in your dental care.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the four molars that sit at the end of each dental arch, and are usually the teeth to erupt. For some fortunate people, wisdom teeth will erupt without pain or fuss. For other individuals, wisdom teeth can present an ongoing problem. Common reasons to extract wisdom teeth include:

• Impaction

• Infections  caused by pockets of bacteria from partly-emerged third molars

• Damage to adjacent teeth

• Problems caring for the gums and nearby teeth

• Severe crowding

If the wisdom teeth are causing significant problems, it is important to have the teeth removed before the damage becomes more severe. Additionally, the recovery period that is associated with older patients is longer than the recovery period required for late teens and young adults.

Like regular tooth extraction, we perform wisdom teeth extraction at our Whittier dental office under sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on your dental needs, our oral surgeon can extract at least one or all four teeth.
